Hawthorne Elementary strives to put its students’ academic needs first with several programs designed to help them succeed. Jump Start (to get students ready for state testing), Saturday School (sessions throughout the year), and after school programs (from homework to game clubs) all have made positive differences. A caring staff prides itself in providing a curriculum that enhances student learning. The reading program features 90 minutes of uninterrupted learning each day, and the math series promotes thinking skills. Parents actively participate in their child’s learning by supervising nightly homework. All of this and the many Saturday trips to various athletic games and places of interest make Hawthorne "The Pride of the South Side."
