English Learner
The English Learner (EL) Program provides specialized language instruction and support for students who are learning English as an additional language. Our goal is to help students develop the English language skills needed to fully participate in classroom learning, achieve academic success, and become proficient in English while valuing the languages and cultures they bring to our schools.
Students receive English language development instruction based on their individual English proficiency level. Services may include direct instruction from a licensed EL teacher, support within the general education classroom, or a combination of instructional models designed to help students develop skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
Students' progress in learning English is measured annually using the state-required English language proficiency assessment. EL services continue until students meet Indiana's criteria for English language proficiency.
Parents and guardians are valued partners in their child's education. Families receive information about their child's English language development and are encouraged to communicate regularly with school staff. Translation and interpretation services are available at no cost to families.

What is the Identification and Instructional Process for English Learners?
- Home Language Survey (HLS): When a student enrolls, a Home Language Survey is completed to determine whether a language other than English is spoken or understood by the student.
- English Language Screening: If the Home Language Survey indicates that a screening is needed, the student is assessed using the state-approved English language proficiency screener to determine eligibility for EL services.
- Parent Notification: Parents or guardians are notified of the screening results, their child's English proficiency level, the recommended EL services, and their rights regarding participation in the EL program.
- Instructional Services: Eligible students receive English language development instruction tailored to their proficiency level and academic needs. EL teachers collaborate with classroom teachers to support students' language development and access to grade-level curriculum.
- Annual Assessment: Students participate each year in the state's required English language proficiency assessment to measure growth in listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
- Exit from EL Services: Students exit the EL program after meeting Indiana's English language proficiency criteria. Former EL students continue to be monitored for academic success for the period required by state and federal guidelines.
