Elkhart Community Schools Celebrates College Go Week

This week marked College Go Week, an initiative from state leaders to encourage students to take steps towards thinking about and beginning their post-high school educational and career journeys. Celebrations and activities were held around the district for all grade levels. Below are just some of the excellent programming our schools provided:

At Elkhart High School, students signed a banner pledging to graduate, which will be displayed in the hallway through the school year. Counselors also ran a "college bingo" game, where students were tasked with finding staff members who went to specific Indiana colleges and discuss their experience. EHS staff and representatives from other post-high school institutions also came by to answer questions and pass out information.

At West Side Middle School during advisory periods, students were tasked with assembling "college pennants," which were flags where they listed their college and career ambitions. These were then hung around the hallways, demonstrating the student body's commitment to continue toward post-high school excellence.

North Side Middle School students were tasked with completing a "career party" quiz. They were presented with several groups of hypothetical people that represented different interests and personality types, including leadership, administration, the arts, and more. Students then went to a career site backed by the state of Indiana, where they entered their results and were presented with a list of careers that matched their ambitions.

During lunch period Friday, Pierre Moran Middle School held "College Go Week Family Feud." Students were asked trivia questions about Indiana colleges, and the results were presented on a "top answers" board like on the game show. Winning teams received small prizes.

Elementary schools across the district all held various spirit days. These were not only to have some fun during homecoming week, but to help some of our youngest students remember that there is a wide world of educational and career opportunities. Celebrations included Dress Like A Career Day at Riverview, Neon Day at Roosevelt, and Superhero Day at Pinewood.
