Elkhart Community Schools Recognized By IDOE For Outstanding IREAD Growth

The hard work of Elkhart Community Schools staff members to provide students with an innovative, robust education is generating excellent results, according to new data from the Indiana Department Of Education.

At yesterday's State Board of Education meeting, Elkhart Community Schools was recognized as one of the top districts in Indiana for IREAD improvement in the 2024-25 school year. Indiana’s third grade literacy rates are on the rise, jumping nearly 5 percentage points in just one year—the largest gain in state history, Even more impressively, ECS saw an overall improvement of 16.2% in passing scores compared to the previous school year—more than triple the state’s historic growth.

This year, 80.9% of ECS third graders passed IREAD, up from just 64.7% last year—the highest growth in all of Elkhart County. In fact, nine of our schools are now at or above the 80% passing mark.

Eastwood Elementary School was highlighted as one of the most improved single schools in the entire state, with a 23% increase, and Woodland Elementary School followed closely with an impressive 21.5%.

This data shows not only the excellence of our literacy programs, but also the commitment of our elementary staff to create a culture of support, motivation, and high achievement.
